Description
Join Lowell National Historical Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9th for a special screening and panel discussion about the documentary "Traces of the Trade"
How were the capitalists of Lowell, MA connected to slavery? During this film screening and discussion, we will take a look at how Northern people and business benefited from the global slave trade. We will also examine the contradictory beliefs that coexisted in Lowell in the 19th century--while some were invested in the "terrible trade," others fought against it through campaigns for abolition. Presented with Professor Robert Forrant (UMass Lowell) and Maritza Grooms (co-host of Kindred Conversations: Living Black in Lowell).
More about the film: "In Traces of the Trade, Producer/Director Katrina Browne tells the story of her forefathers, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. Given the myth that the South is solely responsible for slavery, viewers will be surprised to learn that Browne’s ancestors were Northerners. The film follows Browne and nine fellow family members on a remarkable journey which brings them face-to-face with the history and legacy of New England’s hidden enterprise."
