In honor of Veteran's Day, join us Sunday, November 10, 2024, for a 45-minute talk about the life and legacy of Brigadier General Charles Young.

Brigadier General Charles Young led an extraordinary life of firsts. He was the first African American national park superintendent, the first African American Colonel in the U.S. Army and the first African American military attaché. He served across the United States and other countries, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Philippines, and Liberia.

On January 8, 1922, Young died in Lagos, Nigeria, while on special assignment as the military attaché to Liberia. He was buried with military honors the next day in Nigeria. On June 1, 1923, Young was reinterred with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
