In early March 1776, General George Washington ordered the construction of fortifications at Dorchester Heights. Two weeks later, these actions led to the evacuation of British forces from Boston. For over a century, Bostonians in the South Boston community have commemorated March 17 as “Evacuation Day” at Dorchester Heights.

Join the National Parks of Boston and South Boston Citizens’ Association for the annual commemoration of Evacuation Day at Dorchester Heights, 95 G Street. There will also be an announcement of a substantial multimillion-dollar federal investment to restore Dorchester Heights Monument as a local and national landmark.

  • Speakers will include Mayor Michelle Wu and additional local and national leaders.
  • Featuring performances by Boston Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola and the Boston University Band.
  • This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited, please register to attend this momentous event.
  • To best protect our staff and visitors, masks may be required in crowded outdoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status.
  • Unable to attend in person? Join our livestream on Facebook or Youtube.
