Description

Forward into Light

August 26, 2020 will mark exactly 100 years since the 19th Amendment became law, ensuring that gender could not exclude women from voting in the United States. We will celebrate the 19th Amendment and the continued struggle for universal suffrage after 1920 and through the present in a few ways:

💜 Visit us Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23 or on Wednesday August 26 from sunset until 8:30 p.m. to enjoy the purple and yellow lit lighthouse. This is a part of the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission’s “Forward Into Light” initiative to light up buildings across America in the suffrage colors of purple and gold. Purple signifies unswerving steadfastness to the cause, while gold signifies the flame of the torch leading the way.

⭐ See a temporary, outdoor exhibit about women’s suffrage on the sidewalk around the lighthouse from August 21 to August 26.

💜 Participate in youth activities all month long! Stop by our outdoor visitor center station to pick up a “Design Your Own Ratification Star” or “Suffrage Cat” worksheet to design in the park or at home. These activities and more are also posted at nps.gov/womenshistory

⭐ Are you a Girl Scout? Through March 2021, you can earn a special 19th Amendment Centennial patch! Check the Girl Scout Rangers webpage for more information and give us a call to check on patch availability and program options.
