Learn about a recent study about the African American experience in relation to Meridian Hill and Meridian Hill Park. The study will highlight the subject in the context of DC history from the late 18th century to the present. Topics include:

  • Civil War use
  • establishment of an African American community on Meridian Hill
  • transformation of the site into a park
  • the park’s use during the Civil Rights Movement, including the history of free speech and resistance

Presentation by Elise Elder, in cooperation with the Organization of American Historians and the National Park Service.
