Description

The fighting at Malvern Hill in the early summer of 1862 was the culmination of a week-long series of battles remembered as the Seven Days. In his first foray as commander of what was now called the Army of Northern Virginia, General Robert E. Lee took on a two-fold task: drive the United States Army of the Potomac away from the gates of Richmond, surround it and kill it.

The hope of success in this, however, began to wane as the Union army under the command of General George B. McClellan steadily made its way back to the safety of the James River. For Lee, Malvern Hill offered him a last chance to destroy this army but he would find himself plagued by erroneous maps, vague orders, and poor communication with his officers.

Join Park Ranger Mark Wilcox for a one-hour walking tour of the last engagement of the Seven Days’ battles. Wear good walking shoes and bring sunscreen and bug spray.

Tour meets at 9175 Willis Church Rd, Henrico, VA 23231.
