You are invited to attend Prairie Day on Saturday, September 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at George Washington Carver National Monument! There is something for everyone during this popular and educational event. Co-sponsored by the Carver Birthplace Association, Prairie Day is FREE of charge!

The music tent schedule is set, with many opportunities to hear the incredibly talented musicians. Pickers Post gets started at 10 a.m., with old-time music and song. Abbey Waterworth and Josh Gilbert perform at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., sharing songs rooted in Missouri Ozarks history. The Vogts Sisters take the stage at noon and 2 p.m., with their amazing vocals and original songs. Be sure to arrive early to find a seat and enjoy the music!

Music really adds to the atmosphere for the historic skills demonstrations at the 1881 Carver House. Take a seat and enjoy familiar faces and popular performances! Ann and Bill Riggs play at 10 a.m. Holmes Brigade Shirkers play at 11 a.m., with their unique show featuring Civil War encampment songs. Pickers Post plays at 1 p.m., followed by Ozark fiddler Nathan McAlister at 2 p.m.!

Visit with knowledgeable staff and volunteers from local organizations. Educational exhibits include information on the 1st Kansas Colored Troops, the impact of the Civil War in the region, archaeology, and Native American life. Natural resource exhibits include beekeeping, master gardening, prairie ecology, and bison. Demonstrations include apple cider making, basket weaving, treadle machine sewing, quilting, woodworking, flax spinning, Dutch-oven cooking, wool spinning, weaving, lye soap making, and food preservation. You can make butter, dip a candle, do washboard laundry, try your hand at old-fashioned toys and games, and earn a Junior Ranger badge.

Held in conjunction with Gem City Days in Diamond, Prairie Day commemorates George Washington Carver’s childhood environment through storytelling, music, interactive exhibits, and historic skills demonstrations. Volunteers In Parks make this event possible. Diamond Lions Club will provide food concessions.

Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver - scientist, educator, and humanitarian.
