Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument to Hold Living History Event on November 5
NANCY, KY – Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument will hold a living history event, Civil War Days, on Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m. at Zollicoffer Park. All activities are free and open to the public.
This is the first living history event to be held at the park since it was added to the National Park Service. Civil War Days will feature artillery and infantry demonstrations, a Civil War camp, Civil War music, blacksmith demonstrations, Drill Like a Soldier activity, and children's games. “Living history events create opportunities to bring history to life for visitors to learn about people and events during the Civil War era,” said Superintendent Dawn Davis.
Schedule of Activities for November 5:
- 9 a.m. Camp Opens – Walk among soldiers as you explore a Civil War camp. Interact with them to get gain a better understanding of their lives.
- 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Artillery and Infantry Demonstration – Experience the roar of cannons and fury of muskets during the first of two demonstrations.
- 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Drill Like a Soldier –Take to the field as soldiers guide you through their drills. Both adults and children are welcome.
- 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Civil War Music - Listen to the songs of the Civil War era.
- 2 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Artillery and Infantry Demonstration – The thunderous sounds of cannons will again echo through the hills and valleys during the second and final demonstration of the day.
- 5 p.m. Camp Closes
One of the newest parks in the National Park System, Mill Springs Battlefield National Monument is free and open to the public Wednesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Battle of Mill Springs was the first major United States victory in the Western Theater of the Civil War, breaking the Confederate defensive lines across Kentucky, capturing the attention of national press, and providing a much-needed morale boost for the United States.
