El Malpais National Monument is pleased to announce ‘A Haunted Night Under the Stars’, to be held at the El Malpais Visitor Center from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 26.  Bring the family to experience indoor portable planetarium presentations and outdoor telescope viewing.

This collaboration between El Malpais National Monument and The Albuquerque Astronomical Society (TAAS) is a fun and educational way to learn about the amazing things that can be seen in the dark this enchanted time of year.  The event will start with short spooky guided hikes led by park rangers at 6 and 6:30 p.m., continuous indoor planetarium presentations led by NM Museum of Natural History & Science Planetarium staff, and outdoor telescope viewing hosted by TAAS starting at 7 p.m., weather permitting.

This free event is mostly outdoors with the tours on dirt trails, so wear appropriate shoes and bring layers of clothing to dress for the temperature.  Only use flashlights/headlamps with red lights or cover flashlights with layers of red cellophane.

If the sky is mostly cloudy, observing will be canceled, and the event will end at 8:00 p.m.  If the weather is questionable, check the El Malpais’ Facebook page.

The El Malpais Visitor Center is location at 1900 East Santa Fe Ave, Grants, NM.  For more details about this event, please go to the El Malpais National Monument website www.nps.gov/elma or call the El Malpais Visitor Center at 505-876-2783.
