Description
Disney’s animated film “Mulan” will kick off a Women in the Military multi-program event at Fort Stanwix National Monument on Saturday, August 27th, at 7:30 pm. The 1999 film version of the Chinese legend tells of a young woman who takes her father’s place in the army and rises to prominence with her skills and determination. Before the movie, learn more about the legend of Mulan and the real-life story of Deborah Sampson who disguised herself to enlist and fight in the Continental Army to help America win independence from England.
These Women in the Military programs will highlight the strengths, skills, and efforts of women as they have supported and participated in America’s military throughout its history. “This series is the culmination of several years of research and over a year of planning,” said Park Ranger Valerie Morgan, “And each of the elements of this series will show the importance of women both on and off the battlefield.” Future exhibit openings and events will take place this fall and winter. “Mulan” and the Women in the Military exhibits and programs were made possible in part by a grant from the National Park Foundation.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a blanket, a chair, bug spray, and your favorite snack. As always, admission to park events is free. In the event of rain or wind, the event will be cancelled. A rain date has not yet been announced and will be determined based on availability.
