Arrowhead Jazz Band featuring Charlie Gabriel

"Bourbon Street Parade"

New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park presents the Arrowhead Jazz Band. The Arrowhead Jazz Band is an ever flowing musical ensemble featuring National Park Rangers.  The program is used to demonstrate musical elements that helped nurture New Orleans’ role as the birthplace of jazz.

Known to friends and relatives as Charlie 'G', Charlie Gabriel was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is a fourth generation New Orleans jazz musician. Charlie has played authentic New Orleans music with top traditional musicians such as Kid Howard, Kid Sheik, Jim Robinson, George Lewis and others on Bourbon Street, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and around the world.

Mark Braud, Preservation Hall Foundation Brass Bandbook writes, "New Orleans music is a celebration of diversity. The music is eclectic, combining influences from gospel, show tunes, marches, and Caribbean music.
“Bourbon Street Parade,” written by jazz drummer Paul Barbarin in 1955, is an example of early marching band music’s influence on New Orleans jazz. It highlights characteristic elements of marching band music—press rolls, a four beats to the measure bass drum pattern, and a bugle call—to remain true to the idea of a traditional march. What sets “Bourbon Street Parade” (and other New Orleans marches) apart from traditional marches are the elements of New Orleans jazz that are incorporated into the song: syncopation in the drums (accenting the fourth beat in every other measure), horns freely interpreting the melody, and improvising throughout."
