Description
Richard Scott Power Trio:
"Iko Iko"
Richard “Piano” Scott began playing piano at age four, and took up the trombone while still in elementary school. During his High School years, he began playing with a local New Orleans Traditional Music Group named the "St. Clair Street Band,” and played in local parades with his own group, called the "Queen City Jazz Band.”
It turns out that "Iko Iko," originally titled “Jock-a-Mo,” was actually written in 1953 by James “Sugar Boy” Crawford. It tells of a parade collision between two “tribes” of Mardi Gras Indians. There’s a “spy boy” (a lookout for one band of Indians) encountering the “flag boy” from another tribe and proceeds to threaten to set their flag on fire. Crawford told Offbeat magazine in 2002: “It came from two Indian chants that I put music to. ‘Iko Iko’ was like a victory chant that the Indians would shout. ‘Jock-A-Mo’ was a chant that was called when the Indians went into battle. I just put them together and made a song out of them. I was just trying to write a catchy song.”
