After the battle at Fort Donelson, soldiers began burying the dead and worked to honor the fallen. This work continued during the war and culminated with the establishment of National Cemeteries throughout the nation. Since 1867, Fort Donelson National Cemetery has served as a final resting place for American’s serving in the armed forces. The history of Fort Donelson National Cemetery provides insight into the larger project to establish National Cemeteries and preserve the memory of the men and women buried here.

On the afternoon of Memorial Day (May 26) we will be offering a program covering the history of Fort Donelson National Cemetery, why it was established, how it was established and cover some of the stories of the Civil War soldiers buried here. The program is approximately 30 minutes long and will begin on Monday, May 26th at 1:30 pm. The program will begin at the entrance to Fort Donelson National Cemetery.

Programs are subject to staffing availability. In the interest of safety, in the event of inclement weather, programs are subject to cancelation.  Information as to program status will be available online, or by contacting the Ranger office at 931-232-0576.
