Description

Join a Ranger on a symbolic two-and-a-half-mile hike that marks the time between the Emancipation Proclamation to when the news of freedom arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865.  Together we will celebrate the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” Opal Lee, learn about African American History, and tell stories about enslaved people that lived at Rock Creek Park. 

Recommended for ages 12 and up. Walk may be cancelledin the event of bad weather at the discretion of park staff. Feel free to call the Nature Center (202-895-6070) the day of to confirm and be sure to leave a voicemail for a callback. 

Additional Information:  Meet the park ranger by Peirce Mill Barn. Visitors may wish to park at Picnic Grove #2 (either side of the creek) or at Picnic Grove #1 across from Peirce Mill and walk to the meet-up spot.
