Event unfortunately canceled due to park closure from the Trail Creek Fire.
Description
Big Hole National Battlefield will remain closed to the public through August 7th, the date Nez Perce veterans have historically sponsored a commemoration including pipe ceremony at Big Hole. Members of the Nez Perce Tribe, Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation have historically participated. Therefore, after consultation and agreement with commemoration leaders, we are notifying the public that the event has been cancelled for this year.
We are within the footprint of an ongoing fire. Safety and Cultural Resources are everyone's highest priorities. Until the risks to firefighters, fire management efforts, the public and the critical cultural resources within the park reach an acceptable level, it will not be appropriate to re-open the park. The decision to keep the park closed is being re-evaluated on a regular basis to reflect changing conditions.
