Description

Join us at the Bandelier Visitor Center this weekend for pottery demonstrations by Johnny Cruz.

Johnny Cruz “JC” is a traditional potter from San Ildefonso Pueblo. He is a great grandson of famed potters Julian and Maria Martinez. Johnny became interested in pottery by watching his grandparents, Adam and Santana Martinez, also with the help of his brothers Marvin and Francis Martinez.

Johnny is carrying on the tradition of making the black-on-black pottery. As the years passed on, he is now working on the polychrome pottery which was done by his Great Grandparents before the black-on-black pottery.

A regular participant in several annual Native American Arts shows like the Santa Fe Indian Market, Heard Museum Guild and Arizona State Museum Show, Johnny has earned ribbons from the Red Earth Native American Cultural Festival (Oklahoma City, OK: First Place in Traditional Pottery, 2010) and the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show (Espanola, NM).

Johnny’s pottery is featured at the Andrea Fisher Fine Pottery Gallery in Santa Fe, and in other galleries throughout the southwest.

The purpose of the Cultural Demonstration Program is to elevate the voices of members from the traditionally associated tribes. Demonstrations allow visitors to Bandelier National Monument the opportunity to meet Native American artists while they practice traditional and modern crafts.

Demonstrations are free and open to the public and take place on the back patio of the Bandelier visitor center.

This program is made possible by funding from the Friends of Bandelier National Monument to cover costs like demonstrators' travel and their time.
