Description

At the end of the Civil War, the U.S. Army faced a daunting task. They needed to find, identify, and relocate the bodies of over 300,000 Federal soldiers who had died in the war. The first national cemeteries came into existence to help solve this crisis. In the fighting at Petersburg, over 6,000 U.S. soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice. The newly created Poplar Grove National Cemetery became the final resting place for many. Join a Park Ranger for a 30-45 minute program as they share stories of those who rest here, shedding light on their sacrifices and contributions. This program will also delve into the harrowing work of the burial corps and how the siege was first commemorated.

Meet the Park Ranger for this free program outside the Superintendent’s Lodge at Poplar Grove National Cemetery 8005 Vaughn Road, Petersburg

Program is subject to cancellation due to weather or other issues.
