New Orleans JAZZ NHP’s Song o’ the Day:
“So Long”
One hundred and one – that is the difference in mileage between LeRoy’s planned journey from La. To L.A. and the 1,764 miles a crow would fly from New Orleans to New Scotland (L., Nova Scotia). So what, you ask? Well, we’re featuring “So Long”, today, in recognition of Le Grand Dérangement, which commenced in 1775 and is commemorated annually on this date, July 28th.
Of course, beside the hundred-plus-one mile difference in travel arrangements, other disparities here would include LeRoy’s willingness to sojourn, while those early French Canadians were impolitely invited to relocate. Neither did the “Great Upheaval” function as efficiently as our wing-flapping friend the crow would fly, and those displaced Acadians endured much distress and danger during their unrequested search for a new homeland.
The good news, though, is, that, as we all know, the Brits’ loss was the Gulf Coast’s gain! New homes those pioneers did find, with many of the French families settling near New Orleans and enriching us all with their evolving Acadian become "Cajun" culture. So, we are playing “So Long” to acknowledge those events of so long ago wherein our neighbors said, “So long” to the overbearing British and travelled for so long to become well established not so long away from our La Nouvelle Orleans! So long, mon ami’…
