The United States Colored Troops of Western Kentucky and Tennessee

Fort Donelson National Battlefield

Special Event

  • Free

After the fall of Fort Donelson, the Union army kept a garrison at the fort, and it became a refuge site for those enslaved seeking protection and freedom.  After the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1863, African American men of the western Kentucky and Tennessee area would eventually be permitted to join the fight for freedom as members of U. S. Colored Troop units, and other areas of service.

Join Dr. Nancy J. Dawson noted historian on the subject, as she leads a discussion about the development of U.S. Colored Troop units at the sites of Forts Henry and Donelson and share her research about the lives of the formerly enslaved that volunteered from the local area.
