To celebrate Hampton National Historic Site’s 75th Anniversary, the park will offer a day of special events. A highlight among the park’s offerings will be a special presentation in the Orangery: "Preserving the American Experience: Sully's 'Lady with a Harp' at Hampton House," given by Jennifer Riddell, Manager of Interpretation, Learning and Engagement at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Ms. Riddell’s fascinating presentation, based on historic archives in the collections of both the NGA and Hampton NHS, will show how a treasure of American painting helped to save to treasure of American architecture.
In the years leading up to Hampton House’s designation as an historic site 75 years ago, prospects for preservation of the home, completed in 1790, had been uncertain at best. Ms. Riddell’s talk explores how a familiar painting, long displayed in the mansion, catalyzed the home’s preservation. Today, scholars, visitors, and the surrounding communities continue to reflect upon and broaden the understanding of the ways Hampton’s story embodies the complexity of the American experience.
We hope you will join us to hear this most interesting story of Hampton NHS’s founding and its distinction as the only national historic site designated for its “outstanding merit as an architectural monument.”
