Description
Want to walk off some Thanksgiving calories while enjoying the great outdoors instead of sparring with shoppers over Black Friday deals? Join us for a Ranger led tour of Shackleford Banks!
Enjoy breath-taking wildlife and scenery as we walk across Shackleford Banks. Experience the area known as the submerge at low tide, when birds flock there to forage. Take in stunning views of the lighthouse from an unexpected vantage point. Watch in awe as the famous wild horses of Shackleford Banks roam the dunes in search of food, water, and shelter. Visitors are encouraged to bring their binoculars, spotting scopes and/or cameras to create memories throughout the tour. If you have none of these, that's okay. All are welcomed!
Space is limited to 10 people. Reserve your spot by calling the Harkers Island Visitor Center at 252-728-2250 x 0. While there is no cost for the program, participants will need to purchase a ferry ticket to Shackleford Banks, leaving from Harkers Island. This is considered a moderate walk. Plan to walk in loose sand, through shallow water, over mud flats and climb dunes. Sturdy, closed toe shoes that can get wet are highly recommended. Pack water, bug spray, and snacks!
