Description
Singer/actress Deborah Anne Goss appears as singer/abolitionist/suffragist Abby Hutchinson (1829-1892), the youngest of New England's ‘Hutchinson Family Singers’ who were famous in the 1840's and 50's for their abolition and women's suffrage songs. As Abby she relates various mid-19th century incidents with the use of poems, letters, newspaper reports, and songs that were written and sung in the north to advocate for enslaved people's freedom, as well as to illustrate both the oppression and strength of women and African-Americans. The narrative specifically links women's rights, the anti-slavery cause, and popular song. Several selections have choruses the audience can join in singing.
Deborah Anne Goss, a Vermont native, has acted, sung and taught in the Boston area for over 40 years. Historical projects have long been a favorite part of her career. Since 1994, as one half of the duo The Proper Ladies with Anabel Graetz, she has toured both coasts and performed throughout New England with their a cappella arrangements of popular songs of 19th century America, including several programs at Longfellow House where Deb has also portrayed actress Charlotte Cushman. She is a member of SoloTogether performers guild, has been heard on NPR's Studio 360, and selections from her 2010 CD “Songs of the Abolitionists” were featured on the syndicated WGBH Classical radio production “Music of the Abolitionists”.
Other performance credits include the fabulous “Mama” Rose in GYPSY at New Bedford’s Zeiterion Theatre, the title role in THE WOMAN KING by Brad Ellis (GLEE) for Open Door Theatre, as well as Boston's midwinter 'Festival of Light and Song' and several years of cabaret shows.
