Description

Come celebrate Founders Day with us on Saturday, August 21st, where we don't just celebrate the birth of the NPS, but also the cultures of the Indigenous peoples who founded the pipestone quarries over 3,000 years ago!

Between 10:00 am and noon, visitors can see pipestone pulled from an active pit!

From 10:30 - 2:00, The Lunch Box food truck from Sioux Falls will serve lunch at the Three Maidens picnic area along the entrance road.

At 1:00 pm, Dakota Wicohan will bring two of their horses to the median of the Visitor Center for a program on traditional horse regalia.

At 2:00 pm, photographer Marty DeWitt will be back on site for a presentation called "National Parks, A to Z." There's an optional photo-walk after the program, so photography enthusiasts should bring their cameras and learn everything they can from Marty!

At 3:00 pm, Gabe Yellowhawk will demonstrate traditional Plains singing and dancing (definitely stick around for the end, when visitors get a chance to participate!).

From 1:00 - 4:00, there will also be activity stations for making your own traditional wasna, ledger art drawing, pottery making, and Lakota herbalist Paul Red Elk.

Complimentary cake and coffee in the Visitor Center while supplies last.

All of these events are free (except for the food truck 🙂 ) and open to the public
