Join us for World Migratory Bird Day on May 11th, 2024, at Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site! Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site is partnering with Birdability and Environment for the Americas for special events at the Iron Works! The Birdability program strives to make birding accessible to all.
We encourage all visitors to download the MerlinBirdID from Cornell (link below) to help identify the birds they are seeing and hearing. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/download/
When: May 11th from 9:00a.m. to 12:00p.m.
Where: Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site, 244 Central St., Saugus, MA 01906
Who: Anyone is welcome!
Activities: Activities will include tactile models, arts and crafts, and a bird call introduction
Attire: Please wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions on the day
Experience: No prior birding experience is required; beginners are welcome. Binoculars and other sensory/tactile aids will be available. Join us as we explore the local bird population together!
Accessibility Information: The Iron Works has accessible parking and bathrooms available to participants (standard parking is also available). Most activities will take place in the main courtyard area, which features paved walkways and open grassy areas. Picnic tables and benches are available for those who prefer to sit or may have difficulty standing for long periods
Bus: The MBTA bus 430 stops within a quarter mile of the park for those using public transit
World Migratory Bird Day (May 11, 2024) (WMBD) is an annual global event observed to raise awareness about the importance of migratory birds and their conservation. It aims to highlight the need for international cooperation to protect migratory bird species and their habitats. The event is celebrated on different dates around the world, usually in May, to coincide with the peak of bird migration in many parts of the world. WMBD activities include birdwatching event.
