Description
“Music of the Ephrata Cloister”
Presented by: Christopher Dylan Herbert, musicologist
This Special Speaker Series event complements programming at Valley Forge National Historical Park Dec. 18-19, celebrating the March-In of the Continental Army to Valley Forge. Check your calendars!
This Zoom presentation focuses on forgotten sounds of Vast Early America, specifically that of the Ephrata Cloister of Colonial Pennsylvania. Ephrata was a celibate, Sabbatarian, Pietist community of German-speaking immigrants, and its inhabitants created its own devotional texts and music. Today, over 127 extant music manuscripts of Ephrata are held in libraries, archives, and special collections in the United States and United Kingdom. Herbert's work focuses on researching, transcribing, performing, and reimagining the music of Ephrata.
