Presentation : “Commonwealth of Compromise: Civil War Commemoration in Missouri”
In this program, Historian Amy Laurel Fluker of Youngstown State University will discuss her research into the ways Missourians—white, Black, Union, and Confederate, chose to remember their participation in the Civil War.
Missouri was a badly divided state during the American Civil War. Those divisions also continued after the war and led to fierce debates about the best ways to commemorate Missouri's role in the war through statues, monuments, books, and other forms of memory.
