Description

Join the Civil War Defenses of Washington on Saturday, March 16, 2019 for an exploration of Fort Slocum.

Fort Slocum witnessed the dramatic intersection between slavery and freedom during the war as thousands of formerly enslaved African Americans came into Federal lines.

The fort was also engaged in enemy action during the war. Slocum, along with Forts DeRussy and Stevens, was the main sector of fighting during the Confederate Raid on Washington DC in July 1864, culminating with the Battle of Fort Stevens.

These complex stories will be discussed during the program.
