June 19, 2022, 3:00 p.m. EST
The 400 Years of African American History Commission (400YAAHC) works to ensure that the commemoration of 400 years of African American history is inclusive and appropriately recognizes the experiences, contributions, and heritage of all individuals present at the arrival of Africans in the lands known today as the United States. As a National Partner of America250, a multiyear effort by a coalition of public and private partners to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, the 400YAAHC and its collaborative partners are engaging in an educational and engagement initiative, FREEDOM FORWARD, to increase understanding and knowledge of the history of freedom before and beyond the founding of the nation.
Watch live on Juneteenth 2022 as the 400YAAHC kicks off the FREEDOM FORWARD initiative and their contributions to America250 in Fort Monroe, Virginia and Galveston, Texas, with ceremonial signings proclaiming these places as symbolic sites that represent the beginning and ending of the enslavement of Africans and African Americans in the United States. Through this observance, the 400YAAHC encourages Americans to remember our past as we recall and pay tribute to those who landed at Point Comfort in 1619, those who later sought refuge and freedom at Ft. Monroe, those who ran, risked their lives, and were aided by those who cherished freedom, and by those who in Galveston, TX, finally learned of their long-awaited emancipation.
Hosted by Miss Saniya Gay, the National Student Ambassador for the 400YAAHC and first-ever crowned National Miss Juneteenth, the live event kicks off at 3:00 p.m. EST. It will include the ceremonial signings at Ft. Monroe and Galveston, as well as readings, remarks, and a short documentary celebrating the ties that bind and anchor our history and proclaiming unity and freedom as our destination as we look towards the future.
