Ridgefield storyteller and women’s studies scholar Dr. Darla Shaw will take on the role of Suffragette, Alice Paul, who lived less than a mile away from Weir Farm on Branchville Road during the same time period as Dorothy Weir Young.   The program will focus on common elements in the background of these two activists and how their belief in the power of women and their love of the natural surroundings and farm lands became a passion for both women. This lecture is part of a series of women’s history programs that commemorate the centennial year of the suffragist movement.  In 1919, Congress passed the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution, and when it was ratified a year later, women across America won the right to vote. This historic event happened because thousands of women--called suffragists--fought for over 50 years to secure this right. In this centennial year of that landmark legislation, Weir Farm NHS celebrates and honors the effort, creativity and vision of all women.
