Description
On Saturday, October 14, 2023, in support of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Festival on Craven Street Reconstruction Era National Historical Park invites the public to attend a 1-hour walking tour in the Beaufort National Historic Landmark District exploring the experiences of Black business owners who lived and worked here in the late 1860s and early 1870s.The tour will take place at 11 am and 2 pm, and will begin at the park visitor center at 706 Craven Street.
During Reconstruction, Black citizens acquired property throughout downtown Beaufort, and several started businesses near the present-day park visitor center. These property owners were a mix of formerly enslaved people from the Gullah community, as well as free Blacks from the North who came to Beaufort during and shortly after the Civil War.
Meet at the park visitor center at 706 Craven Street for this unique opportunity to learn about the entrepreneurial spirit of Beaufort's Black community, and their ambitions to provide for their families and their community. This free tour will last around 1-hour and will include approximately 1/2 mile of walking.
