After Dark in the Park: The Ongoing Volcanic Crisis on Reykjanes Peninsula, Southwest Iceland
Join us for a special After Dark In The Park program, “The Ongoing Volcanic Crisis on Reykjanes Peninsula, Southwest Iceland.”
Iceland is renowned for dramatic landscapes, including ice-carved fjords, rifts formed by tectonic movement, and active volcanoes. Volcanic activity in Iceland is monitored by the Iceland Metrological Office through its extensive monitoring network. Several eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Southwest Iceland since 2021 share hazards similar to Hawaiian volcanoes: earthquakes, the opening of new fissures, lava flows, tephra fall, gas emissions and land subsidence.
Jon Gro Pedersen, a geologist and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Iceland (and former USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory volunteer) as she summarizes recent eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula and describes the monitoring and impacts of these events. Free (park entrance fees apply).
