“The System of Civilization: The Creation and Impacts of Indian Boarding Schools.” Indian boarding schools were created to “civilize” native populations in the United States. These schools were widespread and in operation for over a century. The impacts of these schools are still felt today in native communities, including those in Michigan. This talk will focus on the Odawa and their connections to these schools.
Eric Hemenway is an Anishnaabe/Odawa from Cross Village, Michigan and is the Director of Repatriation, Archives and Records for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Eric oversees the management and preservation of historic documents and materials for the tribe. He works with the Archives staff on utilizing those materials in educational initiatives, such as; museum exhibits, curriculum building, publications, historical interpretation, signage, web content, and presentations. Collaborations on exhibits have included the National Park Service, State of Michigan, Mackinac State Historic Parks, Emmet County and the Harbor Springs History Museum. Eric has extensive experience working under NAGRPA and has served on the National NAGPRA Review Committee. Eric is an outstanding and engaging presenter!
