A celebration of the Juneteenth holiday
A recognition of the Juneteenth national holiday, with guided tours and presentations commemorating the end of slavery in Texas at the conclusion of the Civil War. This includes a 1 PM performance of spirituals in the church by acclaimed bass baritone singer Ronald Campbell, accompanied by Anthony Evans on keyboard. There will also be a walking tour of the historic cemetery, placing wreaths at the graves of two Black veterans of Civil War regiments that were stationed in Texas in June of 1865.
In a feature program at 2:30 PM, renowned performers and living historians Carla Lynne Hall and Jim Keyes present a living history program titled, “Liss: Slave, Servant, Spy.” It tells the story of Liss, a woman enslaved by Robert Townsend of the Culper Spy Ring. It is believed that she aided him by gathering information and passing it on to him in British occupied New York City. They re-enact a conversation between Liss and Robert Townsend after the war, in which they discuss their roles in the spy ring, and how best to legally give Liss her freedom.
