Kettle Falls Historical Center, Kettle Falls, Washington

 

Friends of Spokane House will be dressed in North American fur trade attire while reenacting the daily life of traders and voyagers of Fort Colvile. Come check out their emcampment and join the historic talks, demonstrations, and fun! While there, stop in the Kettle Falls Hsitorical Center for local history exhibits.

Sign Talk

Practice the signs necessary to make trade for the fort’s store items and fur pelts. Learn why signs were necessary and why the fur companies, like Fort Colvile, had a protocol to trade with American Indians.

Women of the Fur Trade

Learn of women’s roles in the fur trade companies. See what women did within their job description, what they wore, how they generally lived during the fur trade, and their roles in society.

Life of Free Trapper

Discuss with a hunter how beavers were trapped and the hides prepared for trade. Observe the displays of firearms and animal traps of the 1800s.

Fire by Flint and Steel

Watch fire starting with flint and steel. Then try your hand at the important skill of a fur trader.

Trade Goods of the Fur Trade

Explore a hands-on display of pelts and learn more about each animal. Notice any non-local furs?

Kettle Falls Historical Center (doors open at 9am)

With a small donation, tour the museum to learn this area’s importance from the Kettle Falls fishery to Hudson’s Bay Fort Colvile to St. Paul’s Mission. Explore the artifacts, replicas, and educational displays.
