Description

New Orleans JAZZ NHP’s Song o’ the Day:

Who Is He (And What Is He To You)

“When people ask me about who started jazz I tell them I give the guys in New Orleans the credit for playing it…”, said “Pops” Foster in his autobiography.  He’d be in a position to know.  Born on this date (May 19th) in 1892, George Murphy “Pops” Foster’s family moved to New Orleans when he was 10 years old, and by 1907 he was playing bass with the likes of  Kid Ory and King Oliver.  “Pops”, the pioneering jazz bassist went on to play “from plantation to riverboat” and record with Sidney Bechet, Louis Armstrong, Danny Barker and virtually everyone who was anyone during that early jazz era!

To celebrate “Pops’” birthday, today we’ll listen to one of our JAZZ Park’s favorite bassists.  A one-time JAZZ Ranger, himself, Michael Harris’ bass style does “Pops” proud.
