The African Americans of Washington, DC have served their country for many years, and World War I was no exception.Many joined its National Guard on the eve of the conflict, eager to aid their nation in the event of crisis. With the declaration of war in 1917, the men soon found themselves in a new world, caught between the politics of Jim Crow and their new German enemy.
