Song o' the Day-"My Little Old Home Down in New Orleans"
New Orleans JAZZ NHP’s Song o’ the Day:
“My Little Old Home Down in New Orleans”
Today is the day that a 17 year old peasant girl named Joan led an army to “relieve” the city of Orleans, France, from British occupation. That was in 1429. She is remembered as the “Maid of Orleans” and her likeness sits atop a golden horse right in front of our JAZZ Park’s Visitor Center.
April 29 (1862), is also the day that the city of New Orleans was officially possessed by Union Troops under the command of Major General Benjamin Butler. And, although our town has not erected mementos of Gen. Benjamin “Beast” Butler, he did leave his mark beneath the mounted image of one local hero. It was none other than “Spoons” Butler who ordered the inscription “The Union Must and Shall Be Preserved" be chiseled beneath the statue of Andrew Jackson who sits horseback within his namesake Square.
To honor this “Orleans” kind of day, let’s listen to one-time Ranger Richard “Piano” Scott’s very Jimmi Rodgers-esque cover about “the grandest place on Earth…”!
