Morning Tours
9:30 am - 11:00 am Coit Tower Murals Tour with Jon Golinger of Protect Coit Tower

• Learn the inside story of how the first big art project of the New Deal came together and about the 25 artists who painted Coit Tower murals between January and June 1934.

Presidio Main Post Chapel: Open House and Tour Arnautoff Mural and Art

• The 34 foot mural adorns the east wall of the Chapel. It depicts early Presidio history, with the Ohlone Indians in prominence, and the peacetime activities of the Army. St. Francis stands in the center with eucalyptus trees surrounding and the City of San Francisco beyond. The mural was created by Victor Arnautoff in late 1934 - early 1935 and was a project of the Works Progress Administration. Arnautoff was born in the Ukraine in 1896, came to America and studied at the California School of Fine Arts and with Diego Rivera in Mexico.

Event Program
12:30 pm - The 29^th Street Swingtet: Heavily rooted in the “gypsy jazz” sound of French swing guitarist Django Reinhardt. The 29^th Street Swingtet seeks to revitalize the age of jazz swing in a youthful and energetic manner.

80th Anniversary Ceremony 1:00 pm:

• Welcome
• Speaker: Gray Brechin, Project Scholar for "The Living New Deal," will discuss the significance of the Aquatic Park Bathhouse and artists.
• Stories of the artists: Sara Triest will share about her mother, Shirley Staschen, who was an assistant to Richard Ayer during the Bathhouse project
• Recognition of Art Restoration

2:00 pm - Cake and music by the 29^th Street Swingtet

Roving Stations:

• View the Richard Ayer mural on the third floor and visit stations to learn about the restoration process from Anne Rosenthal, see special park collections items and a new exhibit, Palace for the People, related to the art of the Bathhouse, make an artistic crown, and speak to artist Martin Machado about his sculptural installation, Flotsam and Jetsam, which explores one of the most radical inventions of the twentieth century--the shipping container.

Special Programs 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm:

• Mini Tour: Surrealistic Seascapes: There is madness underneath the water. Dive in to the mind of the painter Hilaire Hiler and explore mythical creatures, the lost city of Atlantis, and a journey to 1930s Paris.

• 3rd Floor: Mini Tour: View the newly restored bas relief “Nautical Abstractions” by Richard Ayer, composed of paint on plaster with embedded rope and piping.

• Mini Tour: Learn about Bay Area artist Sargent Johnson, who was one of the first African American artists on the West Coast to achieve a national reputation.
