NJARRT Talk: “The Tragedy of Tom Paine” with Professor Richard Bell
The North Jersey American Revolution Round Table (NJARRT) welcomes Professor Richard Bell for a presentation titled The Tragedy of Tom Paine.
When Thomas Paine, author of Common Sense, died in June 1809, only a dozen people attended his funeral. This program explores Paine’s meteoric rise during the American Revolution and his equally dramatic fall from public favor in the years that followed. Once celebrated as one of the most influential voices of the Revolution, Paine ultimately became too radical and uncompromising for the cautious new nation he helped inspire.
Professor Richard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and the author of several acclaimed works on early American history, including The American Revolution and the Fate of the World and Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home.
