Description
Lowell National Historical Park and the Tsongas Industrial History Center are pleased to announce the launch of a new book for children, “A History of Change,” a trilogy of stories about Lowell history that address the elementary social studies curriculum.
Written by UMass Lowell undergraduate students, the stories span from Native American and early colonial settlement to the mid-19th century.
The stories vividly recount interactions between children from different worlds: a young Native American girl meets a white settler boy, a farm boy meets a bobbin girl, and a young Lowell-born mill worker meets a French-Canadian immigrant. In each case, the children share a suspenseful adventure.
The UMass Lowell students wrote their stories as part of course-related History and English internships at the TIHC.
Funding from the Lowell Cultural Council enabled Lowell Public Schools students to illustrate the stories. Their work was guided by staff at Refuge Lowell, a local organization that encourages students to develop as artists and community members. The grant also enabled a limited print run of the books, which will be distributed to all Lowell Public Schools third and fourth grade classes.
A virtual book launch will be held via Zoom on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, from 4 to 4:30 p. m.
