Description

July 1863, Baltimore.

In the aftermath of the Battle of Gettysburg, over 7,000 prisoners were brought to Baltimore by rail and then marched to Fort McHenry. Throughout Baltimore, hospital staff and surgeons were overwhelmed by the number of wounded arriving in the city. As the center of U.S. military operations in the area, Fort McHenry’s garrison was responsible for processing prisoners and keeping the city secure.

Join us on July 6th and 7th to explore Fort McHenry’s role in the Civil War. The weekend will feature ranger programs, weapons demonstrations, musical performances, and living history exploring military life, and Civil War medicine.

Informal programming will also include a presentation on Civil War surgical methods by living history interpreter Rusty Dicks.
