160th Anniversary of the Battle of the Crater

Petersburg National Battlefield will host living history programs and tours to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the Battle of the Crater. This 10-hour battle, fought on July 30, 1864, has become one of the most famous events of the siege, yet is often misunderstood. Visitors are welcome to explore the stories of that battle and the soldiers and civilians who experienced it.

 

Saturday, July 27

Eastern Front Visitor Center 9:30 am – 4:30 pm

  • Living historians will have displays focusing on the civilian experience of the siege.
  • An interactive map program about the Battle of the Crater will be offered throughout the day.

Eastern Front Tour Road Stop 8 10 am – 4:30 pm

(All programs will run 20-25 minutes)

10:00 am – United States Colored Troops at Petersburg

10:30 am – Ranger Program: Battle of the Crater

11:00 am – Alfred Waud, Civil War Sketch Artist

11:30 am – Artillery Demonstration

12:00 pm – Infantry Demonstration

 

2:00 pm – United States Colored Troops at Petersburg

2:30 pm – Ranger Program: Battle of the Crater

3:00 pm – Alfred Waud, Civil War Sketch Artist

3:30 pm – Artillery Demonstration

4:00 pm – Infantry Demonstration

Living historians will be available for discussions between programs at their encampments. The park’s hands-on education trailer will also be on site throughout the day.

Programs are weather permitting and schedule is subject to change.
