- Cory Ahownewa is a contemporary Hopi carver known for crafting traditional kachina (katsina) dolls using cottonwood root, natural earth pigments, hand‑gathered feathers, and cotton cord His dolls feature finely carved full-bodied figures, painted in traditional colors, with added details like tied feathers reflecting traditional Hopi symbolism; they vary in size (around 10–14″ high) and are often designed as both freestanding or wall-hanging artworks

In this episode, Cory Ahownewa, a Hopi Kachina doll carver and an advocate for protecting and sustaining cultural knowledge and sites throughout the Grand Canyon and southwestern region, walks us through moments in his life that have influenced his journey not only as an artist, but as a father and servant of his community.
The demonstrations are free of charge. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Location
Located in the Village HIstoric District, opposite El Tovar hotel, on the other side of the large circular driveway, Hopi House is a three-story stepped stone masonry structure with sandstone walls with parapets. Hopi House is adjacent to the Canyon Rim Trail, that runs alongside the north end of the building, overlooking the canyon landscape.
