Join us for a discussion titled "Two Armories, Two Rebellions, Two Centuries; Daniel Shays & John Brown," featuring esteemed historians Richard Smith and Dennis Picard. This event will delve into the gripping narratives of Daniel Shays' 1787 assault on the Springfield arsenal and John Brown's daring attack on the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1859, examining the motivations, comparisons, and consequences of these pivotal moments in American history.
This free presentation will take place on Saturday, July 5 at 1:00 pm in the museum visitor center and promises to be a captivating exploration of two significant events that shaped the course of American democracy.
Richard Smith, a seasoned lecturer and writer on antebellum United States history, brings his wealth of experience and knowledge to the discussion. Since 1995, he has dedicated his career to public history and interpretation, with a focus on 19th Century American literature. Smith has authored and edited eleven books for Applewood Books and contributes regularly to Discover Concord Magazine.
Joining him is Dennis D. Picard, a museum professional with over forty years of experience in the living history field. Picard’s career spans numerous prestigious institutions, including Old Sturbridge Village and Hancock Shaker Village, where he has designed and implemented public programs that continue to resonate today. His extensive background in museum studies and historic site interpretation enhances the depth of the conversation.
