Description

Join the National Park Service and the Wright Dunbar community in celebrating the birthday of poet and author Paul Laurence Dunbar with a special poetry reading and performance in the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center Theater.  david matthews, poet, musician, and author will present selections from his body of work starting at 3:00 p.m., with time for questions and stories after.

matthews, a discovery of world-acclaimed poetess Nikki Giovanni in 1972, has made a lasting impression in the world of poetry. A native of Dayton, Ohio, matthews has often been referred to as the next Paul Laurence Dunbar. His “Evening on Broadway Poetic Production”, which started in 1973, has toured over 300 colleges and universities in twenty-one states. matthew’s work inspired artist Bing Davis to create “Ode for Two Dayton Poets” dedicated to Dunbar and matthews, and the painting will be on display during the presentation.
