From the South Entrance Station, continue following the road you are on for 5 miles, and it will lead you to the Visitor Center. Just before the parking areas, the road curves to the left. You can park your vehicle in one of four parking areas and find your way to the Visitor Center, in the center of the open plaza where restroom buildings, the park store, and the bicycle rental are also located. Stars in Time Part I: Early History of the Cosmos with Astronomer in Residence Dr. David Koerner
Stars and galaxies first formed 9 billion years before our solar system was even born. Learn about the origin of the first stars, their grouping into clusters and galaxies, and their role in making elements important for life. Lecture presentation will be coupled with telescope observations of galaxies including the Milky Way and globular clusters with ages stretching back 13 billion years.
Learn about the science, mythology, and history of the constellations through a laser-guided constellation talk, all under one the darkest night skies in the United States!

Dr. David Koerner is an Emeritus Associate Professor in Astronomy and Planetary Science at NAU and an accomplished musician. He has conducted groundbreaking studies of planet-forming disks at NASA/JPL, co-authored a book on astrobiology, and developed innovative field courses combining astronomy and Earth history. He is a violinist and violist who performs with the Dark Sky Quartet and is also a featured pianist at the Grand Canyon Music Festival. Dr. Koerner will be Grand Canyon Conservancy Astronomer in Residence through November 4th, 2024.
