Description

Throughout the summer, Fort Stanwix National Monument will host an 18th Century “Unsung Heroes’ Days.”

Silversmiths, barrel makers, surgeons, musicians and other tradesmen will demonstrate their crafts inside the fort from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Hands on experiences, appropriate for all ages, will also take place throughout the day.

During the American Revolution, various tradesmen, known as “artificers,’ were hired by the Continental Army to provide much needed services for the soldiers. “An often overlooked part of military life is the work of the army tradesmen,” said Park Ranger William Sawyer, “These people helped clothe the soldiers and ensured they had the equipment needed to do their jobs. Though they worked behind the scenes, they were as critical as the soldiers defending the walls of the fort.”
