Description
Ranger-led Program to view the Perseid Meteor Shower from Lilly Bluff Overlook.
It's a summer shower...of meteors! Every August the Perseid Meteor Shower provides a dazzling display of nature's fireworks! The Perseids are considered one of the best meteor showers of the year; with an estimated peak rate of 100 meteors per hour on the night of August 12th.
Join our ranger on August 12th at 11:00 p.m. (ET) to enjoy the spectacular dark sky conditions at Lilly Bluff Overlook which is a perfect location to lay out your blanket to look up and enjoy the celestial show!
In addition to viewing the Perseids, an NPS telescope will be available for viewing both Jupiter and Saturn, which should be prominent in the night sky.
This event is subject to favorable clear sky weather conditions. In the event of inclement weather or cloud cover, the event may be cancelled or shifted to another night. Be sure to call the Obed Visitor Center before 5 p.m. on the day of the event to confirm the status of the event. Amateur astronomers are also invited to bring their telescopes to join our program and may contact the visitor center for more information.
