The Diné (Navajo) Long Walk - Presented by Ravis Henry

Join us to explore the cultural significance of the Diné (Navajo) people and the important history of their forced removal, known as "The Long Walk."

As a park ranger with Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Ravis focuses on interpretation and education, sharing the stories and history of his people with park visitors.

The Navajo Long Walk was a forced relocation of the Navajo people by the U.S. government in 1864, during which around 9,000 Navajo men, women, and children were made to march over 300 miles from their homeland in present-day Arizona to Bosque Redondo, a desolate reservation in eastern New Mexico.

The journey, conducted under harsh conditions and military escort, led to great suffering and the deaths of many due to starvation, disease, and exposure. Once relocated, the Navajo faced poor living conditions, crop failure, and inadequate supplies, which made life at Bosque Redondo extremely difficult.

After four years of hardship, the U.S. government allowed the Navajo to return to a portion of their ancestral land in 1868, marking a significant moment of resilience and survival in their history.
