19th Century Romances at Jefferson Barracks
From the Book Jefferson Barracks: Defending the United States Since 1826, An Illustrated Timeline
As a US Army post for 120 years, armies grew and were trained at Jefferson Barracks. Generals who changed American history were connected to this place. In her book, author and hsitorian NiNi Harris offers glimpses into life at this Barracks from its beginnings as a frontier outpost in 1826 to the 1940s. It recalls when the US Cavalry was born here and tells the stories of young officers from across the nation and from across the political spectrum who served together at the Barracks during the 1840s and 1850s. As generals during the American Civil War, they would fight against one another, leading armies of thousands in fierce battles.
Many of those young officers found the love of their life while stationed at Jefferson Barracks and a number were married in St. Louis. Harris will discuss many of those relationships that were kindled at this historic post.
